The paperbacks of the early 1970s
It would appear that the transition from printing hardback books to paperback or softback books was a gradual process. A few have been seen from 1971, more from 1972 onwards. Interestingly hardbacks were still being printed in 1974. A selection of paperback covers is shown below.
Some notes on this design:

The book number including the check digit is shown vertically on the front cover and the spine.

The front covers are now the most minimalistic and simplistic since the series begun in 1938.

Other prices appear on the back cover - viz. United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.

A "subject" title is printed on the back cover above the ISBN e.g. Languages seen on the Modern Greek title.

The jigsaw design continues - top left on the cover (front and back) and at the top of the spine.
